Professional profile

Academic librarian with 14 years of experience building and managing programs, services and spaces for students, faculty and community audiences; developing teams of library technicians and student staff; and leading academic governance and hiring. My current work connects experiential learning, student belonging, critical technology education, sustainability, community engagement and research-creation. Department Co-Chair, Librarians’ Department, 2022–present

  • Work collegially with faculty colleagues and Library and University Administration to coordinate the academic work and governance of the Librarians’ Department, including workload, faculty development, annual review, peer reviews, tenure and promotion processes, hiring continuing and limited faculty positions, strategic planning and departmental meetings.
  • Work with the University Librarian, co-chair and University Administration on staffing, budgets, facilities, policy and organizational planning.
  • Co-led the Librarians’ Department Program Review through its April 2025 final report and action plan, translating an external review into concrete plans for research, communications and outreach teams.
  • Chaired multiple successful national searches for tenure-track and term faculty librarians and served on appointments committees for additional searches.
  • Served on the 2022 search committee for University Librarian.
  • Chaired the department’s Workload Committee from 2022 through spring 2025 and remained a member through June 2026. Led the annual development of a three-year rolling workload plan for faculty professional role assignments and shifted the department toward team approaches to liaison, cross-functional public and technical services teams, and shorter workload documents that were more responsive to change.
  • Write responses to faculty Annual Professional Activity Reports, providing formal and formative responses to faculty colleagues each year, with a focus on development and mentorship.
  • Chaired a 2026 Peer Review Committee and served on a 2024 Departmental Faculty Standards and Tenure/Promotion Committee.
  • Led a process-improvement initiative for e-resource troubleshooting, mapping the existing workflow and developing a more systematic process before handing implementation to the incoming Discovery Librarian.
  • Created departmental and governance documentation to preserve institutional knowledge, including a Librarians’ Department FAQ, updated University Library Divisional Council Terms of Reference, and a chair’s guide for the Council.
  • Established and led a mentorship group for colleagues who supervise Library Technicians, focused on developing leadership, mentorship, and delegation skills.

Makerspace Librarian, 2021–present

  • Program Development
    • Created the TRU Library Makerspace, which grew from a 2020 pilot into a seven-room learning environment supporting textiles, digital media, audio and video production, 3D design and fabrication, virtual reality, electronics, crafting and related creative technologies.
    • Developed a program description, list of values, and code of conduct based on two years of operations and feedback from users, staff, faculty, and administration and passed these documents through our Faculty Council.
    • Planned and designed the physical space by conducting needs assessments and user-feedback sessions, prototyping layouts, selecting furniture and equipment, coordinating space changes with administrators and Facilities, implementing security protocols, and managing equipment procurement.
    • Worked with a graduate student researcher to facilitate online focus groups examining how the Makerspace could better support a diverse community and respond to authentic user needs.
    • Developed user- and staff-facing service infrastructure, including the website, equipment lending, technology and event guidelines, statistical tracking, communication channels, and reporting processes.
  • Aligning Operations with Purpose, Values, and Pedagogy
    • Align operations with the Makerspace’s purpose, values, and pedagogy through staff development, programming and partnerships, curriculum integration, policy development, assessment, communications, and outreach.
    • Lead the Makerspace Operations Team of Library Technicians, co-chair weekly meetings to address operational issues and plan future work, and oversee staff development.
    • Manage the operating budget and oversee equipment maintenance and purchasing.
    • Created and direct a Student Ambassador Program that recruits, trains and supervises students as peer educators. Introduced peer-led training in 2024 and moved toward a distributed training model involving ambassadors, technicians and librarians.
  • Programming and Partnerships
    • Co-developed and administered a recurring CELT–Makerspace Faculty Grant offering awards of up to $2,000; supported five awards to faculty in Fine Arts, Social Work, and Student Development through course-design consultation, proposal adjudication, research-assistant mentorship, class instruction, and project assessment.
    • Partnered with faculty to embed experiential and multimodal learning across Visual Arts, Engineering, Co-op/Business, Education, Social Work, and Science curricula. Projects included a multi-year 3D-scanning, printing, and virtual-reality sculpture sequence; interdisciplinary networking-product prototypes; a directed study producing historical laboratory models for a public gallery exhibition; reflective and multimodal assignments; and an 88-square community quilt permanently installed in the Makerspace.
    • Facilitated or led approximately 26 workshops and instructional sessions exploring multimodal assessment and curriculum design, Universal Design for Learning and inclusive pedagogy, discipline-informed applications of generative AI, and experiential learning through 3D printing, 3D scanning, virtual reality, and digital media.
    • Partnered with Indigenous Education, Cplul’kw’ten, Indigenous students, instructors, and community partners to facilitate and resource at least 30 Indigenous-led events and sessions, with over 400 attendances. Programming included Indigenous-led drum and moccasin making, beading and featherwork, ribbon-skirt and ribbon-shirt activities, medicine-bag making, welcome events, Cplul’kw’ten pop-up Makerspaces and Soup Circles, and experiences designed to make university more welcoming to Indigenous school and transition-program students. Established a permanent on-demand smudging room, supported five Indigenous students in paid ambassador or research roles, and secured $12,772 through two Coyote Fund grants.
    • Co-organized five Repair Cafés with a local non-profit group and TRU Sustainability, drawing a combined 480 attendees and advancing community repair, sustainability, and practical skill-sharing.
  • Impact
    • Recorded over 72,000 in-person visits, 17,000 reference interactions, 262 workshops and events with over 3,800 attendees, 725 room reservations, and 2,000 item circulations from March 2022 through August 2026.
    • Led 91 academic class sessions with over 1,700 attendees and approximately another 25 educational sessions that were not class-related, including school groups, transition programs, research programs, and community organizations.
  • Sustainability, Facilities, and Outreach
    • Led sustainability initiatives including the Tool Library, Community Fabric Stash, repair programming and a more accessible in-space tool-use model.
    • Redesigned the tool library and textile and cutting rooms to improve visibility, independent use, safety and workflow; delegated implementation while retaining responsibility for policy and service design.
    • Planned and led donor, school-district, Indigenous transition, TRU World and community tours, framing the Makerspace as an education and belonging space rather than simply a technology service.

STEM Librarian, 2019–2022

  • Supported teaching, learning, and research through information-literacy instruction, research consultations, scholarly communication, collection development and evidence-synthesis support for Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Trades and Technology.
  • Helped multiple research teams plan and conduct systematic and scoping reviews.
  • Piloted Programming and Pizza, bringing students and faculty together with staff from the Library, IT and other units to troubleshoot programming and technology questions.

  • Supported teaching, learning, and research in the College of Pharmacy and across the health sciences.
    • Collaborated with faculty to design and teach approximately 15 hours of active-learning evidence-based-practice material each year, across the four-year Doctor of Pharmacy program.
    • Consulted with approximately 100 Doctor of Pharmacy, graduate students, and faculty annually on research and clinical information topics.
    • Served on an expert Delphi panel defining milestones in evidence-based-practice skill development.
  • Developed and Supported Research, Scholarly Publishing, Research Commercialization, and Computational Research Initiatives
    • Served on the management team for the open-access journal Innovations in Pharmacy and led work to obtain PubMed Central indexing and establish submission workflows.
    • Developed research-reproducibility and open-science training for researchers, graduate students and research-support staff.
      • Proposed and led a pilot initiative for peer-to-peer computational research workshops (Software Carpentry) and led development of a successful proposal for Minnesota to become a Software Carpentry member institute, securing funding and support from the University Library, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the Graduate School.
    • Led a four-person library team embedded with MN-REACH, a three-year, $6 million NIH-supported research-commercialization program, and co-chaired a working group on library support for innovation and commercialization.
    • Contributed to a successful NIH administrative supplement supporting research quality assurance and reproducible methods training for basic-science graduate students.
    • Led an evaluation of electronic laboratory notebooks for four health-science laboratories and a benchmarking study of ELN support at major U.S. research universities.
    • Participated in NIH and NCBI hackathons, including serving as team lead on tools for MEDLINE topic modelling and systematic-review search development.
    • Participated in collaborative research sprints supporting rapid progress on digital-humanities and related research projects.

Carrier Bags for Making the Chthulucene: More-Than-Human Information Practices for Academic Makerspaces, 2025–present

  • A research-creation project that combines critical reading, reflective writing, interviews, material research and iterative making to investigate how academic makerspaces can cultivate ecological thinking, care, more-than-human relations and critical attention to technology and materials.
  • Six-month research-creation sabbatical undertaken July–December 2025; the project continues beyond the leave period.
  • Developed skills and methods in natural dyeing, cyanotype on fabric, canvas waxing, machine embroidery, appliqué, bag construction and large-scale textile work.
  • Received Research Ethics Board approval for interviews and conducted five interviews between Dec. 9, 2025, and Jan. 23, 2026.
  • Shifted from an initially survey-heavy design toward research-creation grounded in material practice, place, narrative and interviews.
  • Developed Mapping Material Matters, a collaborative Makerspace activity that traces materials’ relationships to people, places, plants, animals and technological systems; implementation is planned for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Understanding Successful Student Learning Experiences in Academic Makerspaces, 2025–present

  • Designed a qualitative interview study examining how successful makerspace learners describe motivation, information practices, learning environments, pedagogies, values, persistence and belonging.
  • Developed the research questions, recruitment process, interview protocol and analysis plan.
  • Received Research Ethics Board approval on Aug. 14, 2025, and began recruitment in September 2025.
